GOVERNOR DEJONGH OFFERS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY OF FORMER SENATOR AND ACTIVIST WILLIAM “BILL” HARVEY Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. Monday expressed his sympathies to the family, friends and colleagues of former Senator and community activist William "Bill" Harvey. Harvey died Friday in Florida at age 80. DeJongh said the loss of Harvey leaves a void in the lives of his loved ones, as well as with the entire Virgin Islands community. “"ill was a tremendously valued member of the community who was respected for his leadership and for his tremendous sense of service. For many years Bill Harvey served in public service as a senator in the 13th, 14th, and 15th Legislatures, as well as in the Office of the Governor under Governor Melvin Evans. We also grew to know him through his years in leadership at the Office of Civil Defense, the Family Education Program, the Labor Department, and the U.S. Postal Service. His years in other community service organizations highlight his dedication to the Territory and his overall activism and concern for others. He will be missed." He also impressed us as a local radio broadcaster and television personality. Former Senator Harvey was a member of the American Legion Post 85, American Red Cross, Virgin Islands Businessmen’s Association, St. Croix Community Band, Boys Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, St. Croix Federal Credit Union, St. Croix Public Information Association, Community Hospital Organizations, Boys Scouts of America, Little League, and many other community service organizations. Bill Harvey served in World War II and received a World War II Victory Medal and an Army Occupational Medal. |
