GOVERNOR DEJONGH SCORES MAJOR VICTORY; THANKS SENATORS WHO VOTED FOR “REAL PROGRESS”

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. Wednesday night thanked the ten Senators of the 27th Legislature who voted in affirmative support of the V.I. Government’s public-private initiative with Diageo, USVI. “Their vote was a vote for our future, and a vote that all in the Virgin Islands should note with pride and appreciation,” DeJongh said from Government House on St. Thomas where he closely followed the two-day Special Session.

“There are certain matters that, by reason of their importance, require a higher standard of review, consideration, and care. Our Agreement with Diageo was such a matter. Its importance required a high degree of honesty and openness. It required us to rise above partisanship and above party, and ten members of our Legislature rose to that standard,” deJongh said.

DeJongh said he was elected by the people of this Territory to bring his expertise and experience to bear to bring real change to the Virgin Islands. “Real change requires looking at things in new ways and working with new people not just doing the same failing things over and over, and always getting the same unsatisfactory results. We have been making progress; we made real progress today with this vote.” Some have tried to hold us back. But I believe that the people of our territory are tired of excuses and empty promises. I believe Virgin Islanders wish to say “YES” to opportunity, progress, and cooperation. This vote shows that the Virgin Islands is willing, ready and able to compete on a global scale.

For those who stood together with us and said YES in the Legislature, I, again, say thank you,” deJongh concluded.
