GOVERNOR DEJONGH PROCLAIMS HOUSING MONTH IN THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of June 2008 as "Housing Month," in the United States Virgin Islands. Safe, decent, sanitary, and affordable housing is important to the Virgin Islands and its citizens. The ability to own a home or secure an affordable rental unit is important to improving the overall quality of life in the Territory. A healthy housing industry provides families with affordable housing opportunities, the chance to build equity, strengthens the tax base, creates jobs, opens the doors for further growth and development, and is important to the economic development in the Territory. The Virgin Islands Housing Finance Authority and the Virgin Islands Housing Authority have provided eligible applicants with diverse housing opportunities through their many and varied programs. Through a strong partnership between the Government and the private sector, the housing dream has been kept alive through low interest mortgage loans, major rehabilitation and revitalization projects, and increased availability of low and moderate income rental units. Continued partnerships between the Federal and Virgin Islands housing entities, financial institutions, and housing developers will ensure the creation of new affordable housing opportunities for residents in the Territory. |
