HURRICANE AWARENESS MONTH PROCLAIMED IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of June 2008 as "Hurricane Awareness Month," in the United States Virgin Islands.

The United States Virgin Islands is extremely vulnerable to the effects of tropical storms and hurricanes due to its location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Residents of the Territory need to be more aware of the damage these disasters can cause and the importance of taking necessary precautions against such storms.

The National Weather Service of the United States Department of Commerce, the Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA), and other Territorial agencies, desire to continue working with the residents and the news media to disseminate information on hurricane preparedness to the people of the Territory. Everyone needs to be aware and prepare for the 2008 Hurricane season, including checking their homes and businesses, stocking up on supplies and other necessary items. It is necessary for residents to clean up around their homes and businesses, and discard of unnecessary debris which could cause destruction and injury during a storm.

Information to help residents prepare for the upcoming hurricane season will be disseminated in the media in the coming weeks. We are confident that with preparedness, protection of life will be enhanced and damage to property minimized.
