DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. WEEK PROCLAIMED IN THE TERRITORY

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of May 25-31, 2008 as "Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Week" in the United States Virgin Islands.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by 22 college educated women. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a private, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide support in local communities based on economic and educational development, international and political awareness, as well as, physical and mental health.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly Black college educated women, with more than 900 chapters in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, Bermuda, Korea, Jamaica, Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority became a non-governmental organization (NGO) at the United Nations in March 2003, and monitors the status of women and children in the world, while providing analysis and expertise in monitoring and implementing international agreements on issues that affect the Sorority.

The U.S. Virgin Islands is home to four chapters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which include, the St. Croix Alumnae Chapter, St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter, Sigma Psi Chapter (University of the Virgin Islands – St. Thomas Campus) and Sigma Omega Chapter (University of the Virgin Islands – St. Croix Campus).

The St. Thomas Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was chartered on May 28, 1988 by 17 members of the sorority residing in St. Thomas, who wanted to continue the commitment of public service for the St. Thomas community. As the St. Thomas chapter celebrates its 20th anniversary, they would like to recognize its charter members.

Governor deJongh urges all Virgin Islanders to join in this observance to honor the dedication of the members of the sorority residing in the Virgin Islands, who work tirelessly to continue the legacy of their founders in providing public service to the people of the Territory.
