GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS DAY OF HEALING AND PRAYER AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE IN THE TERRITORY Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed Sunday, May 25, 2008 as "A Day of Healing and Prayer Against Gun Violence in the Territory," to deplore the senseless acts of gun violence in our community. Safety in our homes, schools, and streets, and freedom from fear of gun violence is important to the health and well-being of our residents, visitors and the community in general. Violent crimes seem to be more and more brutal due to the proliferation of weapons, the increase in drug-related activity, and the break-up of family and community life. Victims of gun violence and their loved ones often face serious financial, physical, emotional and psychological losses. It is fitting to set aside this day, not only to remember the victims of violence, but to deplore the despicable acts of gun violence in the Territory. It is appropriate that the community comes together, engage in prayer, and call for healing, while directing solutions to the problem of guns and other violence in our community. |
