TOM JOYNER DAY PROCLAIMED IN THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed Thursday, May 22, 2008 as “Tom Joyner Day” in the United States Virgin Islands.

Tom Joyner is a world-renowned radio personality and philanthropist who hosts the syndicated “Tom Joyner Morning Show.” His foundation was established for the sole purpose of helping students stay in school at historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The University of the Virgin Islands has had the distinction of being named the “Tom Joyner School of the Month” twice -– May 2002 and May 2006. Joyner’s School of the Month campaigns have raised approximately $462,074 in support of scholarship assistance and/or computers for students at the University of the Virgin Islands.

Tom Joyner’s Fantastic Voyage Cruise is held annually as the major fundraiser for the Tom Joyner Foundation and on the two occasions the cruise has come through the port of St. Thomas, Joyner assisted the University of the Virgin Islands’ fundraising efforts by participating in the Caps for Cash Fundraising Luncheon and Shop be-Cause activities.

The Tom Joyner Foundation, through Reach Media, is partnering with the University of the Virgin Islands on this day for the Buccaneer Beach Party – a display of unity between passengers from the Fantastic Voyage 2008 and the populace of the Virgin Islands.

Governor deJongh calls upon the residents of the Virgin Islands to join with him in support of the Tom Joyner Foundation.
