OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR JOINS COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN ST. CROIX CLEAN-UP

Project Red Brick” volunteers remove debris during the clean up.

The Office of the Governor today participated in a large-scale clean-up effort, "Project Red Brick," that included areas from WAPA east to Seaborne, in front of the de Chabert, D. Hamilton Jackson, and Watergut Housing Communities on St. Croix. The land is owned by the Department of Housing, Parks, and Recreation. The "Island Beautification Campaign" was led by Turner St. Croix.

Today’s clean-up was Phase 3 of a beautification initiative that involved cutting tree branches, mowing grassy areas, removing brush, garbage, and debris from land and water areas. Phase 1 included cutting and pruning trees; Phase 2 involved moving in heavy equipment trucks and tractors to remove heavy brush, as well as abandoned vehicles; and Phase 3 included picking up garbage, tires, batteries, household appliances such as refrigerators, and large pieces of metal debris and other scattered junk. The clean-up represents a continued effort on behalf of the Administration to coordinate public/private partnerships for the betterment of the community.

"An effort of this magnitude, that is so important, could not have been achieved without the contributions of many different organizations coming together. The sheer numbers of individuals who joined in this clean-up is encouraging and speaks to the responsibility that we all share in being stewards of the community and good citizens. I commend the various departments and agencies of the V.I. Government, and private sector partners for beautifying this area," deJongh said.

The clean-up commenced at 8:00 a.m. today and concluded at approximately 1:00 p.m. The coalition of partners included: The Office of the Governor; the Roger W. Morgan Foundation; Department of Public Works; Department of Agriculture; Department of Housing, Parks, and Recreation; V.I. Police Department; V.I. Waste Management Authority; DPNR; Capitol Tees; Cost-U-Less; Cruzan Environmental Services; DJ Carl; Marco Water; Reliable Rentals; Seaborne Airlines; St. Croix Animal Shelter; Turner St. Croix; and UDL Lumber. Approximately 150 volunteers participated in the clean-up effort. The coalition plans to continue to launch similar clean-up efforts island-wide.
