GOVERNOR PROCLAIMS PAWS FOR A CAUSE DAY IN THE UNITED STATES VIRGIN ISLANDS

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 5, 2008 as "Paws for a Cause Day" in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The Virgin Islands recently enacted legislation in Act No. 6731 to make acts of animal cruelty felony offenses with severe penalties. The Territory has acknowledge and taken seriously that animal cruelty leads to other violent crimes especially child abuse and family abuse.

There has been an increase in animal cruelty abuses nationally and every effort must be made to reduce animal cruelty abuse before it leads to more violent abuse. Studies have shown that pets normally become the helpless and silent victims of animal abuse in families experiencing violence.
