LIBRARY WEEK PROCLAIMED IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the week of April 13-19, 2008 as "Library Week" in the United States Virgin Islands.

Libraries and library supporters across the Nation and in the Territory are celebrating 50 years of Library Week this year with the theme, "Join the Circle of Knowledge @ Your Library."

Our Nation’s libraries are modern community centers for education, information and entertainment. They play a vital role in providing millions of people with the resources they need to live, learn and work in the 21st century. Libraries are places of opportunity; part of the American dream; a place for education, self-help and lifelong learning.

Awareness and support must be increased for libraries by increasing their visibility in a positive context and by communicating clearly and strongly why libraries are both unique and valuable. More individuals must be recruited to the profession of librarianship to maintain its vitality in today’s changing workplace. The entire library community will be stronger when speaking with one unified voice.

All residents are encouraged to use their libraries for the purpose of improving their lives. Let us also give thanks to our librarians for the valuable and helpful services they provide to our children and the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
