GOVERNOR DEJONGH PROCLAIMS AGRICULTURE WEEK IN THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has proclaimed the week of March 16-22, 2008 as "Agriculture Week", and March 20, 2008 as "Agriculture Day" in the United States Virgin Islands to increase consumer education and awareness of the importance of agriculture.

Agriculture is an important part of our Nation’s and Territory’s economy. A sizeable percent of our Nation’s workforce is employed in some phase of agriculture, including production, processing, manufacturing, storage, transportation, research, education, finance and marketing.

Agriculture plays a unique role in our lives, providing nutrients essential to the healthy growth and development of everyone. In recent years, American and U.S. Virgin Islands’ farmers have endured such hardships as natural disasters, unfair trade practices and high production costs. The courage, ingenuity and persistence of our farmers make it possible for our citizens to spend less of their disposable income on food than do the people of any other country.

U.S. Virgin Islanders need to recognize the economic impact of the Territory’s agricultural industry and join with all Americans in paying special tribute to those involved in the production and delivery of food and fiber.
