Governor proclaims Black History Month in the United States Virgin Islands

Gov. deJongh has proclaimed the month of February 2008, as “Black History Month” in the United States Virgin Islands, in conjunction with the national celebration taking place across the U.S. mainland and abroad.

This year honors the 43rd anniversary of the founding of the observance of Black History Month in 1965. This observance celebrates Black Americans being endowed with the proper foresight, tools and skills to plan, manage, and to act independently in charting their future, thus enabling their empowerment to become a reality. This observance also allows for people around the world to discover, understand, and appreciate the contributions Black Americans have made to the development of the United States of America.

Gov. deJongh urges all residents to join him in the observance of Black History Month throughout the U.S. Virgin Islands, paying tribute to the heritage of Americans of
African descent.
