Governor orders flags to be flown at half-staff Friday and Saturday; St. Croix police honor honored

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has directed that flags on all public buildings in the territory be flown at half-staff Friday and Saturday in honor of former St. Croix Police Officer Akeem Newton who died in a head-on vehicle collision while on duty.

"Akeem Newton was an exemplary officer who gave so much of himself in service to the people of St. Croix and the Virgin Islands. As a member of the law enforcement community, it is fitting that the flags in the territory be flown in honor of his life and in recognition of his many achievements in service to this community," deJongh said Tuesday.

Officer Newton’s remains will be interred on St. Croix Saturday, February 2, 2008, at the "Victorious Believers" Church in Estate Peter’s Rest, Christiansted, following a 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. viewing and service at 11:00 a.m. A motorcade procession will proceed to the interment site at the Kingshill Cemetery. A formal viewing is also scheduled at Government House in Christiansted on Friday, February 1, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. DeJongh approved the request by Newton’s family for a public viewing ceremony at Government House on St. Croix.

Akeem Newton was a dedicated Police Officer who was loved and respected by his fellow officers. His desire to serve his community was evident in the thirteen years that he spent as a member of the Virgin Islands law enforcement community.

The flags will be lowered to half-mast starting at sunrise on Friday and will be returned to full-mast at sunset on Saturday.
