Governor deJongh proclaims Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Week in the United States Virgin Islands

Governor deJongh has proclaimed the week of January 13 - 19, 2008, as "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Week" and January 15, 2008, which marks the sorority’s 100th anniversary, as "Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Day" in the United States Virgin Islands.

Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded in 1908 on Howard University’s Campus, and is the first and oldest Greek lettered organization for college educated African-American women. This sorority has experienced tremendous growth since its establishment, and now has a membership of more than 200,000 members in over 975 chapters in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, Germany, Korea, Japan and the continent of Africa.

This organization has sought to enrich the lives of this community through scholarship assistance, vocational and career guidance, health services and many other community oriented programs. There is a need to recognize this Sorority for its service and contributions toward making this community a better place for all to live in, therefore, I call upon the people of the Territory to join with me in this observance and to thank the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for their service and dedication to our community and the Nation.
