Governor and Tourism Commissioner to meet with officials of American Airlines in Florida

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. traveled to Florida Sunday afternoon for continued discussions with officials of American Airlines on air service to the territory. Joined by Tourism Commissioner Beverly Nicholson-Doty, deJongh will use the Monday morning meeting to continue discussion on the status of air service to the Virgin Islands and in particular, direct flight service to St. Croix. Presently, American provides St. Croix with jet service from Miami, Florida.

During the month of December, deJongh and Nicholson-Doty held similar discussions with principals of Spirit Airlines with an eye towards a commitment from the Fort Lauderdale-based airline for a commencement of direct service from Fort Lauderdale to St. Croix.

In deJongh’s absence and in accordance with the Revised Organic Act of 1954, as amended, Lt. Governor Gregory R. Francis will serve as Acting Governor. DeJongh returns to the territory by Monday evening.
