Governor meets with EPA Regional Administrator
Gov. John deJongh Jr. met with EPA Region II Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg Monday afternoon at the Battery on St. John. Among the items discussed were: The status of wastewater treatment plants on St. Thomas and St. Croix Solid Waste Management: EPA acknowledges the uphill challenge that this issue is for the territory and has pledged support. EPA is interested in the Governor’s plans to name a city planner on St. John. Steinberg said the EPA has heard about environmental concerns on the island and is interested in how water run-off impact is being addressed. Steinberg praised the work of the administration in approving the TPDES: Territorial Pollutant Discharge Elimination System regulations. The EPA saw this as a giant step forward. The meeting, which lasted about an hour, was “positive and supportive,” according to the Governor. Additional discussions are planned on these and other EPA issues. |
