Governor urges Yes vote on Acting Commissioner; Education reform in the balance On the eve of the Senate vote on the nomination of Lynn Spampinato to the position of Education Commissioner, Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. Wednesday urged members of the 27th Legislature to embrace Education Reform and confirm his choice for the top spot at the Department of Education. "When I campaigned for Education Reform, I made a promise to the people of the Virgin Islands to bring about meaningful change in the way that we educate our children in the territory – our next generation. With my election to the position of Governor, voters territory-wide effectively put forward a mandate for change in our education system. It is imperative that we acknowledge that the voices of the community in favor of reform are being heard. Additionally, we must bring about change in our school system by putting forward the best qualified person who shares my vision and who will build a team to implement that vision, in the best interest of our children," deJongh said. deJongh has been in continued talks with members of the 27th Legislature and stakeholders throughout the Virgin Islands community, expressing his strong support of Dr. Spampinato. "The status quo is simply not enough. Real reform is what we need in order to successfully provide our children with the best education possible to compete in the global economy. There is an absolute need, at this critical juncture, for the Legislature to partner with my Administration and with me and turn the V.I. Education Department into a world-class institution," deJongh said Wednesday. Dr. Lynn Spampinato is due to appear before the Legislature on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 10 a.m. for a final vote on her nomination. |
