Governor signs a bill into law reinstituting Taxicab Commission; Takes action on rezonings On Wednesday, Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. not only took action on the FY 2008 budget bills but on other recently passed legislation. He signed into law Bill 27-0018 which reinstitutes the V.I. Taxicab Commission. But his approval of the bill did not come without concern about one section of the measure which purports to require the Governor to submit within thirty days, a full slate of persons to the Legislature to fill the positions on the Commission and if not done, all actions of the Commissioner of Licensing and Consumer Affairs become null and void. "I believe that the intent of the Senate was to have a timely submission of nominees to the Commission and not the threatening nature of the language to take away the powers of the Commissioner. I do not believe it is appropriate to rush appointments of this nature, and request that the Legislature remove this section via amendatory legislation, as the sponsor has agreed to so do. Section 8 of this measure should also be amended to reflect the deletion of Section 7." deJongh also approved two rezoning bills and a zoning variance:
Also approved were bills to name the V.I. Port Authority Crown Bay Marine Terminal after Austin “Babe” Monsanto and the V.I. Port Authority facility at Enighed Pond on St.John after Theovald Eric Moorehead. “Both gentlemen have made significant contributions in their respective professions to their communities and are deserving of such recognition.” And deJongh acknowledged the Legislature’s passage of four honor and commend resolutions which posthumously bestow the Virgin Islands Medal of Honor on four Virgin Islanders who have given their lives in defense of the United States of America: Marine Lance Corporal Shane L. Goldman, Army Specialist Jose Emmanuel Rosario Almestica, Army Private First Class Jason Nathaniel Lynch, and Army Staff Sergeant Kendall Thomas. "The honor bestowed on our fallen heroes with these resolutions shows tremendous respect to their families and our gratitude as a community. The People of this Territory do not hesitate to answer our Nation’s call to service, and we must continue to recognize the sacrifices our citizens willingly make for this Country," deJongh said. |
