Construction of Long Bay Road project to begin

Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls said Monday that Island Roads will begin work on the construction of the Long Bay Road Project this month. Under the first phase of the contract, Island Roads will spend between six and eight months relocating the Veteran’s Drive intersection at Lover’s Lane. "Since this work will involve new road construction, there will be minimal disruption to the traffic flow during this period," Smalls said.

Other phases of the contract between the Government and Island Roads include: completing all of the remaining work at Lover’s Lane intersection; relocating the impacted overhead utilities along Centerline Road and relocating them underground as well as installing a box culvert through the Mandela Circle intersection. The main box culvert will be installed south along Centerline Road, through the intersection and into the grounds of the West Indian Company, Ltd.

"We have begun the effort to coordinate this roadway construction work and establish a Maintenance of Traffic Advisory Group in conjunction with the V.I. Police Department so as to keep motorists and area residents informed about progress on the project," Smalls said.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for October 22, 2007 at 2 p.m.
