Governor deJongh proclaims Arts and Humanities Month in the United States Virgin Islands

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of October 2007 as "Arts and Humanities Month," in the United States Virgin Islands. The arts and humanities enhance the lives of all, and affect every aspect of life in America and in the territory.

"Arts and Humanities Month," is a time when we recognize the contributions of artists, scholars, museums, theatres, libraries, schools, foundations, government agencies and other organizations and individuals who work to keep the arts and humanities a vital part of our lives.

For more than two centuries, the arts and humanities have helped Americans transcend political, religious, racial and ethnic divisions by engaging us in the common task of interpreting and expressing the meaning of the human experience.

Appreciation of our culture and heritage are essential to our growth and renewal as a nation. The Nation’s 23,000 plus cultural organizations, the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Nation’s local and national arts agencies, the arts and the humanities councils are all encouraged to participate in this worthwhile national celebration.
