35th Anniversary of BVI/USVI Friendship Day set for October 20th Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. and First Lady Cecile will host the 35th anniversary celebration of BVI / USVI Friendship Day on Saturday, October 20, 2007. The event is being planned by a committee led by David Edgecombe, Special Assistant to the Governor for External Affairs. Cecile deJongh toured the Crown Bay Center recently with members of the committee to determine how best to prepare the venue for the celebration. "This is a wonderful facility, and with little creativity, we can transform it into a splendid setting for what is expected to be a memorable 35th anniversary celebration of the rich, cultural history of the people of both Virgin Islands," she added. Edgecombe said Friday the planning is in full swing. "I like the idea of building on our many years of friendship to seek out new ways to improve the quality of life for our families and communities. And I particularly like that we’re initiating this ourselves." The theme of the celebration is "BVI / USVI Friendship: Progress for All Through Collaboration" and at the core of Friendship Day 2007 is a representative exhibition of the goods and services produced in the Virgin Islands. "The aim is to create greater awareness of these enterprises; drum up more business for them; encourage more trade between the islands; seek out opportunities for investments and joint ventures; and use emerging technology to reach a world market," Edgecombe explained. In addition, there will be cultural performances, culinary displays and a cook-off between the best chefs from the British Virgin Islands and the U.S. Virgin Islands. "John and I are looking forward to hosting Premier Ralph O’Neal, the official BVI delegation, and the many family and friends who are expected to attend from the BVI,”" Cecile deJongh said Friday. We encourage all Virgin Islanders to join us in welcoming them. Those interested in exhibiting or in volunteering at the celebration are asked to call Ruthlyn White at the Office of the Governor, 693-4313. |
