Governor proclaims "School Crossing Guard Week" in the Virgin Islands

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed this week as "School Crossing Guard Week" in the Virgin Islands. Children all across the territory are beginning a new school year.

These children will be found walking to and from school, waiting at bus stops as well as boarding or disembarking from vehicles. The Virgin Islands School Crossing Guards will be on duty guiding these students as they cross our busy intersections in neighborhoods and near schools.

School crossing guards are the guardians of these students as they travel to school and during their return to the safety of their parents care. They perform a valuable community service every day of the school year in a safe, responsible and effective manner.

The leading cause of death and injury among our students is motor vehicle accidents. Virgin Islands drivers can help to protect our children by being especially careful near schools and in residential areas, by watching their speed, observing traffic control devices and obeying the school crossing guards.

Virgin Islands drivers must be alert for children at school crossings, must review and follow the rules of the road as they apply to school zones and school buses, and respect the noble School Crossing Guards performing their duties.

School crossing guards are deserving of recognition for their tireless, unselfish service to this community.
