Governor offers condolences on death of Cherra Heyliger

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. expressed sadness Friday at learning of the death of well-known Frederiksted resident Clarence "Cherra" Heyliger. Heyliger, a native son of St. Croix, teacher, radio commentator, newspaper columnist and horse racing enthusiast died at a Florida hospital earlier this morning.

"My memories of Cherra are vivid as I have learned about his years growing up on St. Croix, attending St. Patrick’s school and later Central High before entering the U.S. Armed Forces," deJongh said Friday from his offices on St. Croix. I remember Mr. Heyliger teaching in the public schools long before becoming a radio commentator and later the host of his own show on WRRA radio, deJongh added.

Heyliger was known best for his passion for the sport of horse racing. "He was well versed on the sport of kings and frequently dedicated his weekly column in the Avis to this topic," deJongh said. "I will miss his newspaper columns which were insightful; complete with reflections of the past and his outlook to the future." Some of his closest friends have also spoken of Heyliger’s frequent trips to New York and the memory he cherished of a visit to Yankee Stadium where he met fellow Crucian, Shady Morales.

"My wife, Cecile, joins me in extending condolences to Cherra Heyliger’s family and close friends. May the rich memories of his numerous contributions to St. Croix be a source of lasting joy," deJongh said.
