Governor deJongh proclaims "Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day" in the United States Virgin Islands

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed September 18, as 'Take a Loved One for a Checkup Day,' in the United States Virgin Islands. Serious health gaps among racial and ethnic populations, and the general public exist in the territory.

Individuals of African, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American descent suffer from serious disparities in health status and outcomes. Heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and sexually transmitted diseases are among major causes of health challenges.

Prevention and early detection of disease, and prompt referral to quality health care are essential steps to reducing these and other health disparities. The efforts of local communities working together with partners and volunteers to improve the health status of the residents of this territory have proven to be essential to promoting healthy behavior.
