Governor deJongh proclaims "Labor Awareness Month" in the United States Virgin Islands

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed September 2007 as, "Labor Awareness Month," in the United States Virgin Islands. It is important that we note that working men and women have made significant contributions to the economic, social and cultural development of these islands. The economic competitiveness of the territory rests largely on the skills and abilities of our workforce.

Business and Government increasingly rely on their workers to adapt to advancements in technology, to produce high quality goods, provide more efficient services, and to make the production improvements that ensure future competitive advantages. The workers and our youths must adopt lifelong learning as their pathway to future employability. Employers must invest in raising the skills and abilities of both their future existing workers to sustain and improve their productivity.

Implementing workforce development strategies that will ensure the future employability of our workers, raise productivity, and attract new industry to the territory requires the collaborative efforts of workers, employers, educators and unions. Working together, these public-private initiatives will create an integrated, effective, and accountable work force delivery system that focuses on providing high quality, customer-driven training and services that are relevant to worker and employer needs.
