deJongh declares "Caribbean Friendship Week" in the Territory

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. today proclaimed Friday, August 24-Sunday, September 2, 2007 as "Caribbean Friendship Week" in the U.S. Virgin Islands. This ten day period is set aside to recognize the close links of the Caribbean peoples and to foster unity and friendship between the greater Caribbean and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

In honor of this special time, various activities and celebrations have been planned throughout the community in recognition of friendship and its important role in promoting goodwill, peace, and stability. By promoting the unique attributes of our Caribbean cultures, traditions, and customs, including similarities and differences, we celebrate our kinship and value the contributions of all Caribbean peoples to the collective political, economic, social, and cultural progress of the region.

"The friendships between island nations, communities, and peoples from throughout the greater Caribbean contribute immeasurably to the overall wellness and cultural experience of life in the U.S. Virgin Islands. We are blessed to share a tremendous history and an incredible culture with others in the region, and in coming together in celebration and friendship, we collectively grow and progress," deJongh said. "This ten-day period is a perfect opportunity to learn from one another’s cultures and express goodwill towards each other in the name of friendship and peace," deJongh continued.

As we celebrate Virgin Islands-Caribbean Friendship Week, culminating in the festivities at Agriculture Fairgrounds next weekend, we learn from one another’s cultures, and value the uniqueness of all Caribbean peoples and all Caribbean island communities.

deJongh called upon all residents of the territory to participate in the spirit of friendship during this important time.
