John deJongh, Jr. Tuesday described the action of the U.S. House of Representatives in passing H.R. 2107, the CFO legislation designed to take away the duties and authority of the Virgin Islands Director of the Office of Management and Budget, transferring them to a federally mandated official, as "the passage of a proposal whose time has passed."

Governor on hand to welcome home Junior League Baseball Champions

7/30/07 - Gov. John deJongh, Jr. has congratulated the St. Thomas Junior League baseball team who returned home Sunday night one day after winning the Latin American Regional Junior League championship in Panama. DeJongh was on hand at the Cyril King Airport Sunday night to welcome the team home.

Governor offers condolences on the death of Alvin Morton

7/30/07 - Gov. John deJongh, Jr. Monday offered condolences to the family of Alvin Morton on his untimely and tragic death this weekend. Morton was shot to death sometime late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

7/26/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. departed the territory today to attend meetings in the state of Pennsylvania. Also, Lt. Governor Gregory Francis departed the territory on Tuesday to attend meetings of the National Lt. Governor’s Association in Virginia.

Governor and First Lady officially open "Camp Shriver" in the USVI

7/23/07 - First Lady Cecile deJongh visited the James C. Savage Center for the Performing Arts at Good Hope School today to officially open and launch the St. Croix chapter of "Camp Shriver." Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. was concurrently opening the St. Thomas-St. John chapter at the Mark C. Marin Center at Antilles School. Both the Governor and First Lady provided remarks to the children present, joining the Camp Directors and executive staff in celebrating the camp’s inauguration.

deJongh/Francis Administration effects crackdown on after-hours use of govt. vehicles

7/23/07 - The deJongh/Francis administration Monday unveiled a new policy as regards the use of government vehicles. The initiative is designed to reduce the number of government-owned vehicles on the road after regular working hours including nights, weekends and holidays.

Governor and First Lady to launch "Camp Shriver" on Monday

7/22/07 - First Lady Cecile deJongh’s initiative to bolster the goals and objectives of Special Olympics in the Virgin Islands will become reality on Monday when "Camp Shriver" is introduced to the two island districts during simultaneous opening ceremonies set for 8:30 a.m.

7/18/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. this week withdrew the nomination of Glen Dratte to serve on the board of directors of the Public Television System.

Governor offers best wishes for persons injured in WAPA explosion and fire

7/17/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. this evening wished several persons injured in an incident at the V.I. Water and Power Authority Plant a speedy recovery. The incident, an explosion involving one of the largest generating units, catapulted the island-district into a complete blackout. WAPA officials continued the effort to restore electrical power.

Bill to restore statute of limitations for V.I. taxpayers before U.S. House Committee

7/17/07 - The House Ways and Means committee is scheduled to consider legislation Wednesday restoring the statute of limitations for Virgin Islands taxpayers who file their income taxes exclusively with the Virgin Islands Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR). The Virgin Islands provision, which is retroactive to 1986, is part of a package of miscellaneous tax measures introduced by Rep. Charles Rangel, the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Abandoned Car Task Force zeroes in on Soto Town for big clean up this week

7/16/07 - St. Thomas-Water Island Administrator Barbara Petersen will lead the multi-agency Abandoned Car Task Force into the winding roadways of Soto Town on Wednesday July 18. The task force will be in the area from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. to stage a clean up of abandoned, derelict cars that have littered the roads in the community for some time.

Department of Agriculture offers fruit trees for sale

7/13/07 - The V. I. Department of Agriculture’s St. Croix office has a variety of fruit trees available to the public for sale. Trees on sale include avocado, breadfruit, coconut, carambola, chironja, grapefruit, guava, local lime, mango, orange, Tahiti lime, tangerine, cocoplum, genip, strawberry guava, shaddock and fig.

Governor and Lt. Governor express sympathies on death of Mrs. Faye Liburd

7/12/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. and Lt. Gov. Gregory R. Francis late Thursday night extended condolences late to the family of Mrs. Faye Liburd who died at Schneider Hospital after a long illness. Liburd was the wife of former Senate President Almando "Rocky" Liburd and daughter of well-known culture bearer, Dorothy "Dottsie" Elskoe.

7/11/07 - Health Commissioner-designee Vivian I. Ebbesen-Fludd is urging parents/guardians to take advantage of immunization screenings offered by the Department of Health early and beat the rush usually associated with the start of the new school year.

Bureau of Internal Revenue gets new phone number

7/10/07 - The Bureau of Internal Revenue’s St. Thomas office has received a new telephone number. Taxpayers can now call (340) 715-1040 to conduct business at their St. Thomas office.

USVI physicians to be surveyed for statistical data

7/10/07 - During the months of July and August, physicians providing medical, dental and mental health care in the U.S. Virgin Islands will be contacted by the Primary Health Care Office (VIPCO) to complete a survey for the purpose of determining: 1) current ratios of primary health professionals with respect to the general population, 2) sliding fee scales for sites – such as private practices, clinics, health centers and hospitals, 3) the number of full time equivalent (FTE) hours for clinicians, and 4) anticipated future needs for sites.

deJongh signs into law "Noise Pollution Control Act" and two other bills passed recently by the V.I. Legislature

7/8/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has signed into law three pieces of legislation passed recently by the 27th Legislature. His signing of the bills came with reservations about the impact of one measure and with line-item vetoed sections of another. The governor had a July 7th deadline to take action on the various measures.

7/8/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. met recently with Community Foundation of the Virgin Islands (CFVI) leaders and Dr. Donna Stark, the Director of Leadership Development at the Annie E. Casey Foundation, to discuss the potential of implementing the Foundation’s Leadership in Action Program. This program helps leaders become mobilized to rapidly accelerate results for children and families.

deJongh congratulates Laverne Jones, Virgin Islands Track and Field Champion

7/6/07 - Houston-based St. Croix native daughter, and Track and Field champion, Laverne Jones, just returned from competition in Europe and will be taking part in “Laverne Jones Appreciation Day” on Saturday, July 7, 2007, a fundraiser to help defray the costs of medical expenses, housing, food, transportation, and other training costs. The event runs from 12 noon to 12 midnight at the Agriculture Fairgrounds on St. Croix and will feature live music, local vendors, and other entertainment.

V.I. Public Finance Authority Board of Directors Meeting scheduled

7/6/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. will convene a meeting of the Virgin Islands Public Finance Authority Board of Directors on Thursday, July 12, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. The meeting will be held at the Public Finance Authority’s office at No. 24 Honduras, 2nd floor, Frenchtown, St. Thomas.

Governor addresses Realtors Association

7/1/07 - Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. Saturday outlined his administration’s plans to bring about improvements to the real estate industry in the Virgin Islands. DeJongh was the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the V.I. Territorial Association of Realtors meeting held at Caneel Bay Resort on St. John.
