Governor and First Lady to launch "Camp Shriver" on Monday First Lady Cecile deJongh’s initiative to bolster the goals and objectives of Special Olympics in the Virgin Islands will become reality on Monday when "Camp Shriver" is introduced to the two island districts during simultaneous opening ceremonies set for 8:30 a.m. Camp Shriver, begun in the 1960’s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, is a two-week camp which provides recreational activities for people with intellectual disabilities. The goal of the camp is to build relationships between people with and without intellectual disabilities. The introduction of Camp Shriver to the Virgin Islands evolved from a March 1st luncheon in Maryland with Mrs. Shriver, the Governor, the First Lady, Janice Lee of Special Olympics and Michael Akin of Catholic Charities. Camp Shriver will augment Special Olympics in the Virgin Islands providing another prospect for Virgin Islands intellectually challenged individuals. Special Olympics, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, will host Camp Shriver on St. Croix at Good Hope School while the camp will be staged at the MCM Center at Antilles School on St. Thomas. Gov. John deJongh will officiate at the St. Thomas ceremonies while First Lady Cecile deJongh will preside over ceremonies on St. Croix. |
