Williams tapped to lead Housing,
Parks and Recreation
Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has nominated former St. Croix Senator St.
Claire N. Williams to serve as Commissioner of Housing, Parks and
Recreation. Williams has served for the past seven years as Assistant
Commissioner of DHPR and prior to that for a number of years with the
V.I. Housing Authority. Williams has been Acting Commissioner of
Housing, Parks and Recreation since January 1st.
"I am confident of St. Claire Williams’ abilities to lead the department
and his keen awareness of the many programs that are priorities in
housing, parks and recreation," deJongh said.
Williams was elected to the 18th and 19th Legislatures as a Democrat and
held leadership positions in the Senate. During his tenure in elected
office, Williams chaired among other committees, the Senate Housing
Committee. Prior to his service in the Senate, Williams held positions
with the Port Authority, Hess Oil Virgin Islands Corporation, Amerada
Hess and St. Croix Realty. He is also a part-time radio host on St.
Croix’s 970 AM, WSTX Radio.
Williams, a graduate of the then Christiansted High School, holds a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and an Associate of
Arts degree in Business Management from the University of the Virgin
Islands.
An active member of the Virgin Islands Democratic Party, Williams has
held positions including: State Chairman, Vice-State Chairman,
Territorial Committee member and President of the St. Croix Democratic
Club. Additionally, Williams has served as President of the Frederiksted
Lions Club and is an active member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in
Barrenspot where he serves as a music minister.
Williams and his wife Carmen have three adult children and four
grandchildren.
The nomination which is subject to the advice and consent of the 27th
Legislature was formally transmitted to the Senate late Thursday
evening. |
