Multi-Agency Task Force clears area behind Al Cohen’s Mall in Havensight

Make-shift living quarters which existed at a targeted clean up site in Havensight.

The government’s Abandoned Car and Beautification Task Force under the direction of St. Thomas – Water Island Administrator Barbara Petersen Thursday cleared through an area in the general vicinity of the Al Cohen’s Mall in Havensight after increasing complaints by business owners of robberies, vehicle vandalism and other criminal acts in and around the mall. The targeted area sits to the rear of the mall. Over time, the heavily-brushed area had been converted into living space for squatters.

“No one was at the site when the multi-agency task force moved in this morning,” Petersen said on Thursday night. There was a suspicion that up to ten persons called the area home and that they had moved in with clothes, bedding material and food supplies. Backhoes, dump trucks and other heavy equipment were brought in by the task force members to clear through the brush and remove the squatter’s personal effects.

Task force members included representatives of Environmental Health, Fire, Police, Public Works, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Waste Management Authority and the Agriculture Department.
