Goveror proclaims "Hunger Awareness Day"
Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed Tuesday June 5 as “Hunger Awareness Day” in the Virgin Islands. This day is set aside to recognize the low-income working families, individuals, seniors and children who are struggling to meet their basic food and nutritional needs.
As of 2004, approximately 27.4% or slightly more than 1 in every 4 persons live in poverty in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which results in many struggles including deficiencies in their diets as part of their daily living.
All persons living in the U.S. Virgin Islands should have sufficient food, water and nutrients to thrive and live productively. I call upon all residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands to unite and support the efforts of those actively working to defeat hunger and to participate in the various activities to be held in connection with this observance.
