deJongh proclaims "Hurricane Awareness Month"

Gov. John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed the month of June 2007 as "Hurricane Awareness Month". The U.S. Virgin Islands are situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and are extremely vulnerable to the effects of hurricanes formed in these bodies of water. Hurricanes are natural disasters which have the potential to wreak significant loss of life and limb, while causing substantial property and economic damage wherever they strike.

I call upon all residents to participate in the various seminars and other activities that will be conducted during this month in observance of Hurricane Awareness Month. I further call upon the people of the Territory to take the time to adequately prepare themselves, their families and friends, and their properties for the advent of the 2007 Hurricane Season which begins today and runs through November 30.
