Attorney General updates incidents at Golden Grove Correctional Facility

Attorney General Vincent Frazer Wednesday identified an apparent suicide victim at the Golden Grove Correctional Facility as 30-year-old Bryan Felix, a native of St. Croix. Felix was found dead in his prison cell about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and appeared to have taken his own life by hanging. Felix was serving a life imprisonment sentence on a 2001 conviction of first-degree murder, attempted murder and illegal weapons possession.

Frazer said an investigation is ongoing by a Special Investigation Unit within the Justice Department in conjunction with the V.I. Police Department. An autopsy will be conducted on Felix’s body to determine the cause of death.

Also under investigation is a stabbing incident that occurred Tuesday morning. Frazer said while breakfast was being served to the prison population, corrections guards were called on to separate two inmates who had become involved in a verbal and physical altercation. The fight led to Wilfredo Diaz being stabbed about his body with a homemade shank. Diaz was stabbed in the left chest area, left upper back and right arm. The victim is hospitalized at the Juan F. Luis Hospital and was in satisfactory, stable condition on Wednesday.

The suspect in the stabbing, a fellow inmate, was identified as 23-year-old Sabre Spencer. Spencer was charged with third-degree-assault and possession of a dangerous weapon during the commission of a violent crime.

The outcome of both investigations will be made public once the probes are completed, Frazer said, adding that the incidents were unrelated.
