Governor deJongh proclaims "Memorial Day" in the United States Virgin Islands

Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 28, as “Memorial Day,” in the United States Virgin Islands. Citizens of the U.S. Virgin Islands are forever grateful, reverently remembering the courageous patriots who fought in defense of our liberty and the myriad blessings we enjoy in our turquoise waters, sunny skies, and quality of life as citizens of America.

It is fit an proper that we observe Memorial Day annually in honor of the great servicemen and servicewomen who died to preserve our freedom, and the more than 140,000 servicemen and servicewomen who were declared missing in action.

We honor our nation’s finest for their unwavering valor, devotion and self sacrifice. We pray for members of the armed forces who are still enduring combat in defense of our liberty that God will preserve lives, strengthen and encourage them and their families.

The cost of freedom and magnitude of the sacrifices of our servicemen and servicewomen are particularly prominent in the minds of the citizens of the U.S. Virgin Islands as we recently laid to rest two heroes of our own, in the persons of LTC David C. Canegata, III, and SFC Floyd E. Lake.
