Governor deJongh proclaims “Jason Carroll Memorial Day" a day of healing and prayer Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 23, as “Jason Carroll Memorial Day,” A Day of Healing and Prayer, in the United States Virgin Islands. It is to be recognized that safety in our homes, in our schools, and in our streets, and freedom from the fear of violence is important to our residents and visitors to the Virgin Islands. The residents and visitors to the territory deplore these senseless acts of violence especially gun violence. Jason Carroll, an 18 year old student at the University of the Virgin Islands who had spoken out against gun violence during his life, died as a result of a senseless act of gun violence on May 23. It is appropriate to remember that date not only for the death of Jason Carroll, but also as a symbol of the harm that guns and other violent acts are causing members of this community, and to set aside a date to remember the victims of violence. This day is also set aside for the Virgin Islands to remember victims of violence, to heal itself, to engage in prayer and to direct itself to engage in prayer and to direct itself to solutions to the problem of guns and other violence in the community. |
