deJongh proclaims National Tourism Week in the Virgin Islands Governor John P. deJongh, Jr. has proclaimed May 12-20, 2007, as "National Tourism Week in the United States Virgin Islands." The travel tourism industry in the Virgin Islands is vital to our economic stability and growth and contributes substantially to the cultural and social well-being of our people. Travel and tourism are the largest industries in the United States Virgin Islands. Last year the territory welcomed 1.9 million cruise passengers and 671,361 air arrivals for a total in excess of 2.5 million visitors. Spending by visitors territory-wide last year generated $1.5 billion, averaging $4.1 million per day, $171,239.00 per hour, and $2,853.00 per minute. The travel and tourism industry plays a unique role in the lives of the citizens of the territory. |
