deJongh postpones property tax due date

In an executive order, Gov. John deJongh, Jr. postponed the property tax due date. Property taxes are now due on or before May 30th. Payments will be considered delinquent if they are not paid on or before June 30th. The last day for filing an appeal for 2005 Real Property Tax bills has been set for July 15th.

DeJongh decided to postpone the due date because property tax bills were not sent out to property owners in a timely manner. Under Virgin Islands Code, the Governor is allowed to set new dates whenever the issuance of property tax assessments is delayed.

The Virgin Islands Code mandates that the Commissioner of Finance publish the new due dates for property tax payments. It also authorizes the Governor to extend the date by which the Board of Appeals may hear appeals.
