Governor directs V.I. Flags to half-staff to honor those killed at Virginia Tech University Gov. John deJongh Wednesday directed Virgin Islands flags on all public buildings in the territory be flown at half-staff out of respect for the many persons who lost their lives during a tragedy on the campus of Virginia Tech University on Monday. DeJongh’s actions are consistent a presidential proclamation of Tuesday in which President George W. Bush ordered the American flag flown at half-staff on all public buildings until sunset, Sunday April 22, 2007. In a letter Tuesday to Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine, deJongh expressed sympathies on behalf of the Virgin Islands community to the families and friends of those killed or hurt in the tragedy. “Our prayers go out to all enduring this time of great sorrow and pain. DeJongh further noted that the “cornerstone of this great nation is the resiliency, endurance and conflict resolution abilities in time of despair and great tragedy.” Both the American and Virgin Islands flags will return to full-staff on the morning of Monday, April 23, 2007. |
