Governor mourns the passing of former Attorney General

Gov. John deJongh, on behalf of himself, his wife Cecile, their family and the people of the Virgin Islands extends condolences to the family of Godfrey R. de Castro who died on St. Thomas on January 24th. Mr. de Castro had served the people of the Virgin Islands as Attorney General during the administration of Gov. Alexander A. Farrelly.

DeJongh served with Attorney General de Castro and remembered him as a gentlemen who brought both to his work and all his activities, a demanding standard of professionalism and precision. “Godfrey de Castro had already completed a distinguished legal career in New York when Gov. Farrelly named him Attorney General. He brought to that post not only a lifetime of experience that he had gained abroad, but a strong commitment to the traditions of these islands that he had been taught as a boy and young man. He was a man of broad intellect and learning, and, as often is noted, we found ourselves going back to our dictionaries to find the definitions of words that it seemed he alone knew and used.”

DeJongh said he hoped that the prayers of the many friends and colleagues of Godfrey deCastro would bring solace and comfort to his family at this difficult time.
