Governor visits C.A.H.S. campus after Wednesday night fire

Gov. John deJongh today lamented the loss of classrooms at the Charlotte Amalie High School on St. Thomas after the Wednesday night fire at the high school campus in Estate Thomas.

DeJongh said he was struck by the dangerous disregard for education by whomever set the building on fire. “On one side of the campus, we are in the process of completely rehabilitating the gymnasium facilities and here we have those that will prevent our young people from gaining an education by destroying classrooms.” DeJongh and Sen. Liston Davis toured the campus first thing Wednesday morning. Authorities said there was an earlier report of an arson incident at the CAHS campus on Tuesday afternoon.

DeJongh ordered the V.I. Fire Services to move full speed ahead in its investigation of the cause and origin of the fire.

The chief executive also decried those who continue to call in bomb threats against public facilities especially schools and learning centers where day to day instruction is disrupted. “As was pointed out on Wednesday, bomb hoaxes are now considered acts of terrorism and I encourage anyone knowing persons who engage in such actions to contact police authorities immediately.” Two bomb threats were called in Wednesday to facilities of the Water and Power Authority on St. Croix during some demonstrations by employees.
