Obama supporters campaign in town
On Friday, Feb. 1, Tony Lake and U.S. Rep. Bill Delahunt, D-Quincy, were campaigning in Belmont to make the case for Barack Obama for president. At a “coffee and dessert” house party — not a fundraiser — hosted by Joseph and Marina McCarthy, they came to convince “undecided” voters to cast votes for Obama on Primary Day. Delahunt, a native of Massachusetts and former Norfolk County DA, spoke about his experiences working with Sen. Obama in the U.S. Congress as well as on the campaign trail. Lake, who attended secondary school and college in Massachusetts and was later a professor at Mount Holyoke College, spoke about his experiences with Sen. Obama as his campaign foreign policy chief. Lake also spoke about his work in previous administrations — particularly with Presidents Clinton, Carter and Nixon. Also attending the primarily Belmont event were voters from neighboring towns. A special guest was the First Lady of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cecile deJongh. The wife of the governor, deJongh journeyed to Massachusetts to help local volunteers during the pre-primary weekend. McCarthy and deJongh met recently in South Carolina over the Martin Luther King Day weekend when McCarthy and 24 other “Massachusetts Women for Obama” were joined by several women who flew up from the U.S. Virgin Islands to do the same. That long weekend was such a success that deJongh as well as two other V.I. traveling volunteers, Julie Cassinelli and Cleo Brooks, decided to come to Boston to help local volunteers.
