First Lady campaigns for Barack Obama; Shares her experiences from the campaign trail with the Territory

First Lady Cecile deJongh, along with her daughter, Rene, and local, civic leader, Julie Cassinelli travelled last week to South Carolina to campaign on behalf of Senator Barack Obama for President. Joining them was Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick.

With less than a week before the state’s upcoming Democratic Primary Election, First Lady Cecile deJongh, along with her daughter, Rene, and local, civic leader, Julie Cassinelli travelled to South Carolina to campaign on behalf of Senator Barack Obama for President.

The three women joined forces with other members of the "Obama for America" New England Steering Committee to lend their support and help mobilize South Carolina women to vote for Senator Obama in the upcoming January 26th Democratic Primary Election.

The trip took the ladies on a three-day whirlwind campaign tour which included canvassing door-to-door, campaign rallies and volunteer phone banks. On Saturday, they met at Senator Obama’s Horry County Headquarters for a rally with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, former South Carolina Governor Jim Hodges, and former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus. Following the rally, they went door-to-door canvassing with several other volunteers in Horry County.

"Rene and I had a wonderful experience campaigning for Senator Obama in South Carolina this past weekend," said Cecile deJongh. "We found South Carolinians to be warm, friendly, and very politically engaged. Meeting and campaigning with the Massachusetts's Women for Obama group made the trip all the more interesting."

While in South Carolina, the ladies also campaigned at a local mall, helped volunteer at campaign phone banks, worshipped at the Sandy Grove Baptist Church led by Rev. Pastor Johnson and attended a Martin Luther King, Jr. Gospel Competition at Myrtle Beach High School as well as listened to a speech by James Clyborn at another event honoring Dr. King.

Gov. John P. deJongh Jr. and first lady Cecile deJongh have endorsed Barack Obama’s candidacy for President and have committed themselves to help promote the Senator’s candidacy both locally here in the Virgin Islands and wherever they can be helpful abroad.
