Governor's Summer Reading Challenge 2009

During the Summer of 2009, students across the territory were challenged to read more this summer in a campaign initiated by Governor deJongh. Read 5!, the Governor’s Reading Challenge, kicked off in June and continued through August.

Students that successfully completed reading the five books and turn in the tracking sheets will receive a certificate of completion and have their name printed in the local newspapers and listed on the U.S. Virgin Islands Government web site in recognition of their achievement.

Students who participated in the program were invited to attend a special ceremony with Governor deJongh after reading five or more books. Special "Fun Days" were held on St. Croix on October 24, 2009 and on St. Thomas on November 7, 2009. Additionally, 10 students who read 20 or more books were randomly selected to join the Governor onboard the cruise ship Disney Magic for a special luncheon as a reward for their achievement.
