Honorable Eileen Petersen
Inaugural Committee Chair

Eileen R. Petersen, retired judge of the U.S. Virgin Islands Territorial Court, was the first woman to serve as a judge in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Prior to her tenure on the bench, Judge Petersen served as Assistant Attorney General for the Virgin Islands and on numerous occasions as the Acting Attorney General. She served in the courts from 1971 to 1994. In 1996 she was appointed by the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands and confirmed by the Legislature as the first Chairman of the V. I. Casino Control Commission. She was recently re-appointed to the position and is presently serving a five-year term.

 Judge Petersen received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts degrees from Hampton University, and her Law Degree from Howard University. She has done advanced legal studies in Labor Law at George Washington University. Because of her contributions to the courts, bar associations and the Virgin Islands’ community, she has received numerous awards including the distinguished William H. Hastie Award presented by the National Bar Association, the Image Award presented by the National Association for U.S. Virgin Islands Affairs, and The Thurgood Marshall Award given by the National Bar Association Judicial Council.
